More Than a Vacation

How One Retiree Found Purpose and Adventure with 美姬社区

Why hands-on science travel became the highlight of Judy鈥檚 retirement鈥攁nd how it could transform yours.

When Judy Wieske retired at age 55 after a 37-year career as a visual information specialist for the federal government, she knew exactly what she wanted to do next: see the world. But not just as a tourist. Inspired by a friend鈥檚 美姬社区 expedition, Judy dreamed of traveling with purpose鈥攖o places she鈥檇 never imagined visiting, and in service of something bigger than herself.

In 2012, Judy joined her first 美姬社区 expedition in Namibia, where she worked alongside scientists to study and conserve wild cheetahs. 鈥淚 fell in love with Africa on that trip,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was my first time seeing a lion in the wild, and a herd of elephants.鈥 She spent hours observing animals at a watering hole, quietly watching as wildebeest, zebras, and other animals took their turn.

But it wasn鈥檛 just the wildlife that captivated her. As she helped monitor animal behavior, track cheetahs鈥 movements and ecology, and support local education programs, Judy realized she was part of something essential. 鈥淭he scientists didn鈥檛 have enough people to do the work,鈥 she said.

I felt like I was doing my part in the world to help protect this place and these animals.

That feeling stuck with her and inspired many more journeys. Since that first trip, Judy has joined 16 美姬社区 expeditions across the globe: tracking sharks in Belize and Florida, protecting leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica, and restoring coral reefs in Bali. For Judy, these weren鈥檛 just bucket-list adventures. They were immersive, hands-on, and meaningful experiences that redefined her retirement, as well as her relationship with the planet.

NOT JUST TRAVEL鈥擟ONNECTION

Judy joined her first 美姬社区 expedition with a friend, but she soon began signing up for projects on her own. With 美姬社区鈥檚 research team model, she never felt alone.

鈥淥nce you get to the airport and you meet the other people on the team, you become instant friends,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o, it鈥檚 like you鈥檙e traveling with friends already.鈥

Their shared sense of purpose created instant bonds. 鈥淵ou have similar mindsets and interests, and you have so many things in common that it鈥檚 like you鈥檝e been friends forever,鈥 said Judy. 鈥淎nd then you become friends forever. I have friends all over the world now that I met on 美姬社区 projects.鈥

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Judy also saw 美姬社区 as a way to deepen family connections. Inspired by an aunt-niece duo on an 美姬社区 team in Costa Rica, she invited her niece, Mary, to join her on an expedition. In 2014, over Christmas, the two returned to Costa Rica to help protect leatherback sea turtles.

鈥淲e spent Christmas at the sea turtle hatchery under the stars,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was the first time I saw bioluminescence. You鈥檇 step in the sand, and the light would just shoot out from under your feet.鈥

That magical moment marked the beginning of a shared passion. While Judy and Mary had always been close, their 美姬社区 experience brought them even closer. 鈥淚t was an additional bonding thing that made our relationship even better,鈥 she said.

Since then, Judy and Mary have joined six expeditions together鈥攆rom Australia to Belize鈥攎any focused on coral reefs.

鈥淢ary鈥檚 a water lover,鈥 Judy said. 鈥淪he wants to see all the reefs before they disappear.鈥

REAL SCIENCE, REAL IMPACT

Judy believes that what sets 美姬社区 apart is how deeply involved volunteers are in the research.鈥溍兰缜 is so hands-on that you really feel connected and part of the research,鈥 she said. 鈥淪o, I just keep going back.鈥

She also points out that 美姬社区 is more affordable than many traditional travel experiences鈥攁nd far more meaningful. And she loves experiencing things that tourists aren鈥檛 able to do鈥攚hether that鈥檚 catching a piranha on the Amazon River, tagging a tiger shark in Florida, or relocating leatherback sea turtle eggs in Costa Rica.

But more than the moments themselves, it鈥檚 the impact that stays with her. She appreciates knowing that her work is truly valued.

鈥淭he interns and biologists [in Costa Rica] work day and night,鈥 Judy said. 鈥淲hen we showed up to help, we gave them a night off. Seeing them be able to relax or have a beer with dinner felt really good. They work so hard, it鈥檚 great to be able to help them out in that way.鈥

A NEW WAY TO SEE THE WORLD

Retirement gave Judy the freedom to travel. 美姬社区 gave her a reason.

That purpose has changed the way she sees the world鈥攁nd how she lives in it. After returning from one of her expeditions in Africa, she looked at a few shriveled blueberries in her fridge. 鈥淣ormally I would be like, 鈥榃ell, I鈥檓 not going to eat those, I鈥檒l eat the good ones,鈥欌 said Judy. 鈥淏ut they were perfectly fine to eat. Even with something that simple, you look at it differently.鈥

Now, Judy hopes to bring more of her nieces and nephews on 美姬社区 trips. 鈥淚 want them to see what else is out there, beyond 鈥榥ormal鈥 life,鈥 she said.

For Judy, 美姬社区 expeditions aren鈥檛 just travel鈥攖hey鈥檙e a way of life. They offer a way to explore the world, live her values, and stay connected to what matters most.

I鈥檇 rather help tag sharks in Florida than sit around on a cruise ship. I want to have a purpose when I travel.
