The Power of Giving:
Two Donors, One Shared Mission
An educator transforms her teaching. A donor lives her dream. Both fuel 美姬社区鈥檚 vital mission.
BRIDGET: A TEACHER PAYS IT FORWARD鈥擣OR HER STUDENTS, AND EARTHWATCH
On Day 1 of her first 美姬社区 expedition, high school science teacher Bridget Ward was having second thoughts. 鈥淲e were ready to quit,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淚 thought, 鈥楾his is insane. We鈥檙e working our butts to the bone, we鈥檙e in the middle of the rainforest, we鈥檙e hiking, we鈥檙e using machetes, we鈥檙e getting stung by bees, we鈥檙e setting up camera traps. And then there was a thunderstorm.鈥
It was the summer of 2014, and Bridget had traveled to Costa Rica to join the expedition 鈥淭racking Costa Rica鈥檚 Mammals鈥 alongside a team of fellow educators who had been awarded 美姬社区 teacher fellowships.
While Day 1 had been a considerable challenge, Day 2 was a different story. 鈥淣o lies, by the second day, we were ready to go,鈥 said Bridget. 鈥淚t was like we were suddenly trained researchers, and we knew what to expect.鈥

Over the next two weeks, the team tracked wildlife and interviewed farmers to help scientists assess the effectiveness of Costa Rica鈥檚 environmental policies. In the evenings, the teachers brainstormed how to translate their experiences into richer, more dynamic lessons for their students. In the process of directly contributing to field research, the team bonded over their shared experience, and many of them are still in touch today鈥攐ver a decade after their expedition.
For Bridget, the 美姬社区 expedition transformed how she viewed science鈥攁nd how she would teach it for years to come. Since Costa Rica, she has traveled to the Galapagos Islands to study marine biology, participated in research on Weddell seals in Antarctica, and incorporated real-time citizen science projects into her classroom. Today, as Science Department Chair at Springfield Central High School and a National Geographic Certified Educator, she continues to weave authentic science into her curriculum.

Bridget also seeks opportunities to directly engage with scientists about their research, and encourages her students to do the same. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 realize how open scientists were before I started working with 美姬社区,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 thought they would always be too busy, and they are busy, but they鈥檙e often more than happy to connect because they love what they鈥檙e doing and want to share.鈥
In 2024, Bridget was invited to join the Board of Directors for the Norcross Wildlife Foundation in Massachusetts, which supports wildlife habitat protection, environmental education, and global conservation efforts. When asked to nominate a recipient for the Foundation鈥檚 annual conservation grant, her choice was clear.
鈥溍兰缜 started it all for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was time to give back to them.鈥
One of the things about educators is we always want to expand on our education to be better teachers for our students. But the truth is, we can鈥檛 afford it. An experience like 美姬社区 that provides fellowships for educators really does transform their classrooms and how they teach their students.

CONNIE: FROM DREAM TO REALITY: A LONG-TIME DONOR EXPERIENCES THE MAGIC OF EARTHWATCH
Connie Thompson鈥檚 美姬社区 journey began with a simple act of generosity鈥攔enewing her annual membership as part of her regular giving. In the late 1980s, Connie received her first 美姬社区 Expedition Guide, what she calls her 鈥渨ish book.鈥 For two decades, she generously donated to 美姬社区, eager to support an organization that inspired her, while dreaming of the day that she, too, might join an expedition.
In 2009, that day arrived when she traveled to Alaska to join the expedition 鈥淎laskan Fur Seals.鈥 Her wish book had finally become reality. The expedition gave Connie a front-row seat to science in action, allowing her to contribute directly to conservation research and witness firsthand the power of 美姬社区鈥檚 mission.
After I was able to participate in an expedition, I really saw the wonder of an organization that actually helped the understanding of this planet earth, that encouraged me to increase my donation as my finances might allow.

Since then, Connie has participated in five 美姬社区 expeditions, including her most recent trip to Portugal to join the expedition 鈥Discovering Ancient Societies in Portugal.鈥 That trip held special significance. Every year, 美姬社区 members鈥攖hose who generously donate on an annual basis鈥攁re entered into a drawing to win a free 美姬社区 expedition of their choosing. In 2024, Connie was the lucky winner.
鈥淚've learned so much and met interesting people from all over the world,鈥 said Connie. 鈥淚鈥檓 so glad I've had the opportunity to participate in so many exciting adventures.鈥

As a donor, Connie sees 美姬社区 as an organization where her contributions have a tangible impact. Every expedition, every data point collected, and every discovery made is fueled by the generosity of donors and volunteers like her. And every time she returns home from the field, she carries new stories and experiences that connect her even more deeply to the mission.
Like Bridget, Connie鈥檚 support not only fuels critical research but helps open doors for others to experience the same life-changing opportunities.
WHY DONOR SUPPORT MATTERS
Bridget and Connie arrived at 美姬社区 from different places鈥攐ne as an educator searching for tools to inspire her students, the other as a donor who would eventually experience the magic of field research firsthand. Yet both have experienced the profound impact that 美姬社区 has: for individuals, for science, and for the planet.
At 美姬社区, every expedition tells two stories: one of scientific discovery and one of personal transformation. Our donors come from all walks of life, yet they share a common belief in the power of hands-on science to change lives and protect our planet. 美姬社区 relies on these donations to fund cutting-edge research and to provide fellowships that make these transformative experiences accessible to students, educators, and individuals from all backgrounds.
By supporting 美姬社区, donors like Bridget and Connie are investing not only in science, but in people鈥攅mpowering volunteers, teachers, students, and communities to directly contribute to environmental research while helping to conserve our planet for generations to come.
